Diabetes in the Elderly

Older people with diabetes are particularly at high risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye damage, depression and limb amputation.

Do not pass off any symptoms with the phrase ‘I’m just getting old’. The symptoms may be related to high or low blood glucose, ketoacidosis or symptoms of complications due to diabetes. Prevention of complications is the key. Visit your doctor regularly to check for and treat any early signs of complications.

It is important to keep a reminder about your medicines and appointment schedules if you have a tendency to easily forget.

Other disabilities, as a result of aging, can complicate the management of your diabetes. Be sure to let your diabetes specialist know about any other ailments so that he/she can alter your regime according to your medical history.
