Prevention
Prevention is always better than cure.  This fact is very important in diabetes as there is only the possibility of control but not of cure.
There are two aspects of prevention:
  • Primary prevention
  • Secondary prevention
Primary Prevention
Primary prevention involves taking measures to reduce the risk of developing diabetes. However, there is no conclusive evidence that Type 1 Diabetes can be primarily prevented. Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes is possible in two groups:-
  • high risk group
  • general population.
The high risk groups in turn can be identified by an elevated BMI, increased waist circumference, lack of regular exercise and first degree family history.  The general population can be addressed through electronic and printed media either directly or indirectly. Both groups should be advised to maintain an ideal body weight, have proper nutrition, adequate exercise and maintain a low stress environment (refer Healthy Living).
Secondary Prevention
This involves reducing complications, therefore minimising the cost of care, morbidity and mortality. Early detection of diabetes and proper management will achieve this goal.

In addition to blood sugar control it is wise to control lipids, hypertension and renal function, to prevent the development of complications.
